Use Mirrors to Preview Blocks
Marti likes to preview blocks by reflecting a small portion in a pair of mirrors; the multiple reflections create the illusion of an entire block. In the diagram, a portion of the blocks is reflected, showing what the whole block would look like with those colors in those positions. You can also use the mirrors on a piece of fabric to see what specific printed patterns will look like repeated in a block.
Cut one triangle or enough pieces for a portion of a block. Position the mirrors and place a piece of tape across the top to hold the angle. Preview different color combinations and prints.
Flexible positioning makes Magic Mirrors perfect for previewing blocks with just a few pieces of fabric.
45°, 60° and 90° Patterns
Eight-pointed stars
6- and 8-piece Kaleidoscope blocks
Sunburst
Mariner’s Compass and other round designs
Patchwork blocks that are made in quarters
Use Long Magic Mirrors to Preview Blocks
The photo on the front page illustrates viewing partial block repeats with the mirrors. It is much easier to “see” an entire block with the long mirrors by cutting out a few pieces and opening the mirrors to the appropriate angle. Like the first look? Sew a few pieces and look again for even more accurate view.
45° Kaleidoscope Patterns. Kaleidoscope is one of our favorite quilts for designing with mirrors. Find this fabulous quilt in Kaleidoscope ABCs along with pages of information on designing with mirrors. Both the quilt and the block below it are cut from border prints.
60° Triangle Patterns. Place the mirrors on a border stripe to see hexie block you’d get with 6 60° triangles.
90° Geometric Patterns. Square blocks like Diamond Star can be previewed the same way. Cut out enough pieces for one quarter of the block, arrange them in the appropriate design and position the mirrors at a 90° angle on one corner.
Circular Patterns. Any block that is made using symmetrical quarters can be previewed with Magic Mirrors, too. To repeat a circular pattern like Mariner’s Compass, cut a few pieces of each shape, arrange them in order and use the mirrors to “see” the whole circle.
Appliqué Patterns. You can also design appliqué blocks by cutting different shapes and arranging them on a back- ground fabric to represent ¼ of a block. Hold the mirrors at 90° angles for viewing. Rearrange the same pieces to see what other patterns appear; try holding the mirrors closer together or on portions of the pieces to see even more designs.
USE WITH MIRROR ANGLE HOLDER. You’ll love the accuracy and ease of using Magic Mirrors with the From Marti Michell Mirror Angle Holder, Product #8937. Clear acrylic will not obscure vision. Deep channels to firmly hold mirrors in place in the 3 most popular angles—45°, 60° and 90°. Approximately 3½” square. See Related Products below.
They are PERFECT for: • Rotary cutters–Cut multiple layers at one time • Shapes and sizes–Specific-size 1/8-inch thick acrylic pieces. No guessing which line to use on a ruler • 1/4-inch seam allowances already added • Laser cut accuracy on every piece • Corners–Not just blunt but revolutionary double blunt corners engineered for perfect alignment • Permanent identification system • Companion tools for strip cutting and piecing techniques.
Our template sets for rotary cutting feature special engineered corners that automatically reduce bulk. This revolutionary corner concept means cutting pieces that match perfectly–
• No pinning or guessing required • No more "dog ears" ensnared by the throat plate • No shadowing through light fabrics • No going back after sewing to trim excess bulk ~ it's trimmed away at the same time the pieces are cut.• The thick acrylic templates mean you can rotary-cut multiple layers of fabric at one time.
